Mentoring Programme No 2 We launched our second mentoring programme on 21 January. Like the first, it is aimed at estate agents to acquire the skills and knowledge and professional standards which they need to get ahead and stay ahead in our fast-changing and increasingly complex industry. In line with our commitment to promoting transformation, we give preference to historically disadvantaged estate agents, and we offer the programme free of charge. It is funded by the Services SETA, the authority responsible for education and training in our, and other service industries. The programme is an IEA Western Cape initiative, and we look forward to it being taken up by the other IEA regions around the country. Our first programme, which ran from April to August last year, was a runaway success. Based on lessons learned during that project, we have been able to shorten the programme to three months, which will enable us to run more programmes during the course of the year. "It's very much a case of transferring skills and knowledge," says IEA Western Cape manager Vivien Marks. During the three-month programme, the twenty-five participants will attend regular lectures on a range of topics, and they will be given research projects to carry out. At the end of the programme, there will be a final assessment, followed by certification. They will also be paired off with IEA members, who will act as mentors, and share their wealth of professional experience with them. "We originally thought of asking only IEA directors to act as mentors," says Vivien Marks, "but there is such a vast treasure-house of expertise among our members that we have decided to involve as many people as possible." Some of the participants in last year's pilot programme will also become mentors in due course. They bonded so well during the programme that they have stuck together as a group, and we will be conducting an advanced programme for them during the year. A number of them have established their own companies as a result of personal growth gained from the programme, as well as embarking on development projects with great success.
