IEASA/REBOSA National Roadshow generates huge interest

Article Date :13 Jun 2011

If attendances at the recently held country wide REBOSA/IEASA roadshows are anything to go by, then the timing of the establishment of a new order in the Real Estate industry is just right, if not long overdue, says Dr Andrew Golding, national president of the Institute of Estate Agents of South Africa (IEASA). “Without exception in each of the 15 centres around the country the roadshows have been a great success, drawing in both current IEASA members as well as non-members to discuss and debate the important issues of the day facing the industry as a whole,” he says.

Dr Golding says the mandate and support from delegates was clear: in organising the industry into separate Business and Labour organisations, it will be possible to influence and contribute to important decision-making processes which determine the future in respect of policy, legislation, skills development, professionalisation, and, of course, transformation. Once set up, both organisations will be in a position to influence economic, social and labour policy and legislation in the interest of their members, promote the real estate sector, drive transformation, commission research on relevant real estate issues, consult with members on national affairs and as a result play a meaningful strategic role in the development of the industry into a profession.

“Having received this mandate, there is now a great deal of work that needs to be completed in a short space of time to ensure that both organisations are firstly correctly set up and constituted. A number of sub-committees have been established to assist in this process. Furthermore, discussions have been initiated with other stakeholders in the industry in the hope of creating genuine alignment and even potentially unification. Finally, then, representative discussions can be initiated with the likes of the government departments of trade and Industry as well as higher education, the Services Seta and the Estate Agency Affairs Board in the hope of creating a new level of mutual understanding.

“It is certainly an interesting time to be involved in industry matters and furthermore to be involved in shaping the way the industry will look going into the future. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all who have participated in this shaping process. In particular I would like to thank Pam Snyman, current IEASA Chief Operating Officer and Dina Porteus, current National spokesperson for REBOSA for their tireless efforts in driving this process, across the country, to a successful conclusion,” adds Dr Golding.
