75 years of service to South Africa's estate agents
REORGANISING OUR PROFESSION: THE LATEST
The process of reorganising estate agents into separate representative bodies for "business" (i.e. principals) and "labour" (i.e. non-principals) continues.
Since our previous update in March, we have finalised IEASA National's new Memorandum of Incorporation, i.e. our new "constitution" as the "labour" body. We have lodged it with the Companies & Intellectual Properties Commission for registration.
We have also made good progress towards creating the principals' body. This will be the "business" counterpart to the IEASA. It will be called the 'South African Real Estate Principals Organisation', or SAREPO. Once SAREPO has been registered, principal estate agents will migrate from the IEASA to their new organisation.
Some members are still unsure why we need separate bodies. Quite simply, it is to comply with government requirements, so that government will accept us as the representatives of our profession. We are part of the finance/ real estate/ business services sector which is the largest single contributor to South Africa's economy (currently 15% of the gross domestic product). We need to have a say in decisions that affect us. If we don't, others will take it upon themselves to speak for us.
We have decided to form SAREPO, to maintain the synergy between principals and agents which is needed to promote the interests of our profession and achieve our common goals. We don't object to REBOSA, but we encourage principals to do their homework before migrating to their new professional home, and to join the body which best fulfils their needs.
This reorganisation is one of the greatest challenges which the IEASA has faced in the 75 years that we have served our profession. We are making steady progress, but it is a lengthy process and there is still some way to go. We encourage all our members to be patient, to maintain their membership, and to remain active participants in IEASA. The results will be worth it.
Yours sincerely
for INSTITUTE OF ESTATE AGENTS OF SOUTH AFRICA
